About 6,500 Public Service Company of New Mexico customers in the downtown and east side areas of Santa Fe lost power Wednesday afternoon.

A power outage caused by equipment or line damage from digging took out power for more than 6,000 Public Service Company of New Mexico customers in Santa Fe for a couple of hours Wednesday afternoon and knocked out the stoplights at some busy intersection in and around downtown.

The outage was reported a little after noon, according to PNM's outage map. It originally affected about 6,500 customers in the part of Santa Fe east of St. Francis Drive, including parts of downtown and the east side. Numerous stoplights in that area were not working as of about 1 p.m., including most of the lights along Old Pecos Trail, Old Santa Fe Trail and Paseo de Peralta.

As of 2:30 p.m. just about 1,160 customers were still without power, according to PNM. Power had been restored to all but a handful by 3 p.m.
